The imposition of a scrap import ban by Chinese authorities at the end of the year will cut approximately 4,500-5,500 tonnes from the country’s vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) production per year, Metal Bulletin understands.
According to an announcement on the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection’s (MEP) website on August 17, all four categories of vanadium scrap are “forbidden” to be imported into China under new regulations expected to come into effect after December 31, 2017.
The ban shows Beijing’s resolve in its war against pollution and echoes the stringent environmental inspections seen across China over the past year, showing that the country is endeavouring to curb pollution to air, soil and water from both domestic and foreign sources.
The four categories and their HS codes are as follows:
HS Code | Forbidden list |
2620999011 | Containing more than 20% of V2O5 of slag, ore ash and residue |
2620999019 | Containing more than 10% but less than 20% of V2O5 in the slag, ore ash and residue |
2619000021 | Containing more than 20% of V2O5 of vanadium slag generated by producing steel |
Waste catalyst containing vanadium |
